Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from her family and she was raised by her mother, grandma and godparents. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder based on words as a young toddler. Ford's passion for acting started in her early years. Ford joined at the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one few weeks, she realized it was not the right fit for her. Ford made an application at the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won the position she wanted on her third try. A classmate of hers included Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut in Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1990. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such programs on television like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. In addition to her regular stage work, Tate was a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies that were added to her repertoire in 1996.
